In these “tough economic times”, I’m fortunate to have a great job at a great marketing agency. But we’re managing struggles as well, and that includes the requirement that we each take one unpaid day off each month – called furlough.

So you can take that approximately 5% decrease in your annual salary, and you can sulk about not being able to eat out at restaurants as often as you did before. Or you can look at the fact that you just gained EIGHT hours to yourself every month (or 11 if you commute like I do!). A whole day to get out in the great outdoors, to donate your time to a favorite cause, to learn a new skill you’ve been thinking about, or to simply do nothing and relax!

What did I decide to use that time for? Well, you know my pet photography is a huge source of enjoyment and fulfillment for me, and you *know* how I feel about shelter dogs. I’ve done one-off shelter photography for a while now, but most places prefer you come in on a slower weekday to spend time with the dogs. So that’s what I’m doing! I’ve decided to split my furlough day in half and spend four hours every-other Friday with the animals at the Animal Rescue League of Brewster.

You can see photos of my first trip here and here. These photos will be used to boost the dog’s profiles and visibility, and of course I’ll be sharing them over at my photography blog and through an upcoming web project launching soon. Maybe you’ll consider bringing one of this little furballs home with YOU someday!

The Obama campaign paid about $4 million for 30 minutes of television fame last night. I’m not entirely sure it was used correctly, but I’m a person who has been paying attention. I was a little bored right from the start. I would have liked something crazy and new, something indicative of this exciting moment in our American lives. I suppose it was good for the average viewer who needed a summary of anything they may have missed in the last few months.

The name-dropping was impressive. You’ve got your big politicians, your CEO of Google, and your pity-stories that just happen to come out of swing states.

I almost wish the Obama campaign hadn’t done the whole infomercial thing because he would have won on equal ground anyway.

What would you do if you had the nation’s attention for 30 whole minutes? I thought about this for a while and decided I would dedicate the time to pet adoption and shelter/rescue/rehab operations.

Please EVERYONE, consider adopting your next companion. There are dozens of breed-specific rescue options out there if you think you know what you want. These folks have pulled dogs out of poor shelter conditions, brought them into their own homes, and done everything possible to find new loving families who will open their arms.

Bromley’s family’s house burned down ten years ago, and Brandon’s family was displaced by a tornado. Both dogs spent too long in a shelter after that, having no idea what happened to their humans but willing to give their unconditional love anyway.

You’ve seen what we found in Bromley… a better commercial doesn’t exist. Yes, some dogs come from more difficult backgrounds, but you CAN find a match for your life.

A special thanks to friends Mike & Peg, Kevin & Danielle, Paul & Kristin, Carina, Tracy & Mike, the Mazzareses, Amy & Mike, Kim & Dave, Sarah & Roger, Nancy & Brian, Margaret, and several of our neighbors for taking the chance.

Now that the days are longer, Gary started reaching out to a lot of lab rescue groups to find the perfect companion for our 10-year old Bromley.

Just a month or so into the process, we got the call today! We’re picking up Brandon THIS SATURDAY in CT!

Brandon is two years old and was displaced by a tornado in Tennessee. He will miss his family and particularly his sister, Chase, but we’re ready to devote all our time to welcoming him into our family!

Obviously many more photos to come!! And for those who’ve asked, we may change his name depending on how well he likes his current one.

Now…. leash, collar, younger dog food, dog bed…. Eeeeeeee!
